In Canada, dental assistants are classified into two levels: Level 2 and Level 1. Level 2 dental assistants have completed additional training and education, allowing them to perform a wider range of duties. They can assist with complex dental procedures, take and process dental X-rays, and provide preventive treatments. Level 1 dental assistants provide essential support in clinical and administrative tasks, such as preparing instruments, assisting during procedures, and managing patient records. Together, Level 2 and Level 1 dental assistants contribute to the smooth functioning of dental practices and ensure patients receive quality care.

Level 2 Dental Assistants are more advanced and have a greater range of responsibilities than Level 1 Dental Assistants. They are responsible for performing a wider range of tasks, including many of the same duties as Level 1 Assistants, as well as additional responsibilities such as:

  1. Expanded chair-side duties: Level 2 Dental Assistants may assist with more complex procedures, such as placing and carving fillings, taking impressions, and making temporaries.
  2. Coronal polishing: Level 2 Dental Assistants are trained and certified to polish teeth and remove stains, this is a routine procedure that is done after cleaning teeth, it helps to smooth and polish the surface of the teeth and remove plaque and surface stains.
  3. Oral hygiene instruction: Level 2 Dental Assistants are trained to instruct patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, such as how to properly brush and floss their teeth. They may also demonstrate the use of oral hygiene aids, such as interdental brushes and water flossers.
  4. Dental Radiography: Level 2 Dental Assistants are responsible for taking radiographs, which are essential for diagnosis and treatment planning. They must be trained and certified to use the radiographic equipment and must follow the regulations and guidelines set forth by the regulatory bodies.
  5. Record keeping: Level 2 Dental Assistants are responsible for maintaining accurate patient records, including dental charts, radiographs, and treatment plans. They must keep accurate records of treatment provided and ensure that patient records are kept confidential.
  6. Laboratory duties: Level 2 Dental Assistants may be responsible for performing laboratory duties, such as pouring and trimming study models, fabricating custom trays, and making whitening trays.
  7. Supervision: Level 2 Dental Assistants may be responsible for supervising and training Level 1 Dental Assistants and dental office staff.

In addition to these specific duties, Level 2 Dental Assistants are also responsible for adhering to the regulations and guidelines set forth by regulatory bodies such as the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia (CDSBC) and the National Dental Assistant Examining Board of Canada (NDAEB).

Overall, the role of a Level 2 Dental Assistant is to assist the dentist or dental hygienist in providing quality care to patients. They also have more advanced and specialized skills, which enable them to perform more complex procedures, and are responsible for more advanced and specialized tasks than Level 1 Dental Assistants.
